Have a Listen: Hush Arbors

In times of recession and stressful environments, we just want something pretty sounding to accompany all the Ambien. Hush Arbors is actually a southern gentleman named Keith Wood and pal Leon Dufficy. Perhaps they studied folk-awesomeness at some point because their music is damn good. Although Hush Arbors have been strumming around for nearly 10 years, it is the their most recent album, Self Titled, that caught our attention. Full of monolithic, fuzzy, psych folk rock the album grows on you like REM sleep. Prepare for the dreamy treat, "Follow Closely" released on Estatic Peace and surely you will be able to wing yourself off those sleep meds.

Getting Fixed

Urban Outfitters has stepped out of the over-priced-hipster-chic-apparel-gadgets-home-decor-and-useless-books realm to brings us bicycles. Teaming up with Republic Bikes, the retailer could play a role in getting more colorful, fixed-gear bicycles on the road than emission spitting automobiles. The bikes can be customized with over 100,000 different color and component combinations; looks as if things could start to appear a bit more psychedelic on our roads, sidewalks and parks. If you're stalling on getting your wheels, you can start to customize your bike immediately and Republic Bikes will build and ship it to yo ass. Biking is a kind form of transportation to our planet so just do it. Let's just hope that Urban Outfitters will put their new editions in the clearance section of the store, so we can cop ours at 70% off.

In light of this bike movement, which will hopefully take over cars in coolness, its our pleasure to play "Black Mags" by The Cool Kids

Give me my fucking money now, not when I'm dead

Richard Hell and the Voidoids

We can't wait for the September re-release / re-configuring of Richard Hell and the Voidoids 1982 cult classic, Destiny Street.  Hell rescued the album from his drug-adled past and repaired it with new guitar work from Dowtown axemen like Marc Ribot.   Info and preorder available on InSound.   Hell's anthem, "Blank Generation" in the stream.

Chalk One Up For B Nasty

Let my people go

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton successfully charmed the tiny pants off North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, to release two American journalists. The former Head of State/Saxophonist/Harlem resident/gentleman of the night met with Kim Jong-il to negotiate the release of the two journalists. In March, Euna Lee and Laura Ling were arrested near the North Korea-China border for illegal entry (why doesn't China just build a giant fence, duh). Their punishment was decided in June by a North Korean court: 12 years hard labor for their "grave crimes." Luckily, the women were saved when their hero, B-Nasty, convinced Jong-il, over a long apologetic dinner, to issue them a "special pardon." That makes our favorite uncle Bill the highest level U.S. bro to waltz into Pyongyang, North Korea's capital in over a decade.

Hold De Line - It's Darth Baño Time

Sure, we've seen videos where an artist and their entourage walk down a "hardened" street looking completely comfortable and accepted while they spit fya. But there is something different about this video. Maybe its because Darth Baño a.k.a BATHROOMSEXXX of Ninjasonik is the homie. Maybe it's the extreme ass-shakin-booty bass of Major Lazer matched with the sharp tongue and Tone Loc composure of Sir.Darth Baño that compels us to watch and wish we had the same soundtrack to a similar life (although some of us do.. cough, me). I don't know gang, you checks and make your own decision. All I know is this is my 18th time watching it since it surfaced yesterday. Also, word has it that Darth Baño will be dropping more remix action on us tomorrow night at the infamous Happy Endings party; guess you'll have to go and be a cool kid to find out if that word is true. Until then, stay up people.

Pristine perm Mr. Baño

Stark Profiles Esau Mwamwaya from The Very Best

E strums a few chords before his interview

Esau and the boys been getting a ton of press lately but this is one of our favorites:

"They told me, 'people in New York don't dance.' People need to dance," Esau Mwamwaya said, speaking of his recent performance at Manhattan's Le Poisson Rouge. Dance they did, much to Mwamwaya's enjoyment.

Full interview from Stark.

Jay Z Shows Love

Adam Yauch a.k.a MCA announced he has been diagnosed with cancer in his saliva glands (Parotid Gland). All shows, including New Jersey's All Points West Music and Arts Festival, have been canceled until MCA has completed treatment and gets some much needed R&R. In place of the Beastie Boys headline spot at the festival, was MC-Businesses-man-pop-icon-mogul-fine-ass-wife'n-urban-gentalman Shawn Carter or better known as, Jay-Z. In a tip of the hat, fellow MC Hov, paid tribute to the Beastie Boy's and MCA's absence by rocking "No Sleep Til Brooklyn." Check its and lets stays up.

Mugshot Monday: Lemonade

We first met the guys in LEMONDADE on the GREEN OWL ranch in Austin during SXSW.  Located about 15 miles outside of downtown Austin, there are serious people magnets in them hills -- the kind that draw together artists like BLK JKS, the So So Glos, The Very Best, Theophilus London, BLAQSTARR, Shilpa Ray, The Very Best, etc.  Months after SXSW, I bumped into Alex (pictured left above) on a Williamsburg sidestreet and he and the boys agreed to this Mugshot Monday exclusive interview.

Who's the hero in the band? who's the villain?
Ben's the hero. He got the van. So we suppose Alex and Callan are left to split the villain duties.

What do you think of Paul Newman and his contributions to the citrus beverage community?
Newman makes a nice Limeade, Alex's favorite drink.

When you guys talk about politics, it sounds like....
Conspiracy theories. Indubitable power corrupts indubitably.

A you-tube that you saw that made you think, gee, i should do that at home!
It was one of those "water-engine" youtubes. We can't find the specific one right now. You know the Joe Cell or whatever? That would be awesome. Just a car full H-H-O cruisin the coastline, checkin the swell.

Talk to us about Mujava's song, Township Funk.
We liked it more when you couldn't find it without having a forum lurking friend. It was maybe the best music video we saw last year. Our basque friends in Delorean played a live version.

Visuals by Ry Fyan

3 artists to watch in new york / Brooklyn right now?
Visual Artists: Tauba Aurbach, Ry Fyan, Shaun Kessler. They are all friends who create art from special, and not usually explored parts of the brain.

How'd you start playing music?  Why didn't you stop like all the rest of the kids?
Alex- piano lessons enforced from an early age
Ben - my parents had a top 40 cover band that played at fancy country clubs and weddings throughout the 80's, so I was playing music in the home from very young.
Callan - started a few years ago. The kind of music I wanted to hear wasn't being made by anyone else.

Favorite place to grub in brooklyn?
Rooftops and backyard BBQs

What should we be looking forward to in the future of LEMONADE?
More tours (our next starting August 18th!), a four song ep on True Panther Sounds in the fall. A TV series.  Currently we are writing a proper album even though we would like to just release a ton of singles with remixes.

I noticed Omar Souleyman on your myspace wall, any comments about this?
That was a funny dabke.

Man vs. machine?
Girls.

What happens after the end of the world?
We don't know but we hope that dolphins save us.

"Sun Chips" by Lemonade in the stream.

Theophilus London Plays Warm Heart at Diesel Party

Telli, Theophilus London and Michael Angelakos

Diesel threw a major party last night at Webster Hall in NYC. Diesel's focus on quality extended to their open bar which, included Patron, Bulleit Bourbon, Ciroc and Smart Water (you know, the Jennifer Aniston shit). Green Owl rolled in deep with a good chunk of our crew ready to get loose. Tellie BATHROOMSEXX introduced longtime homie Theophilus London for his set. Having Esau Mwamwaya around from The Very Best tour, lead to dynamite consequences; He and Theophilus London performed an original version of Warm Heart of Africa. There were single tears.

Shingai (of Noisettes) and Theophilus London proving young Black kids are making some of the nastiest moves.
